Problems with the Wisconsin Federation (shibboleth) authentication service, preventing access to D2L and other applications, have been reported this morning. The issue is under investigation by the UW-Madison access management technologists supporting Wisconsin Federation. Campuses will be notified when service is restored.

A post-outage review will be conducted focusing on the events that transpired. We believe that a lightning strike or power surge caused critical damage to the Data Center Universal Power Supply (UPS) during a significant storm that hit the campus [Wednesday] morning. The system is architected to fail over to live power, but it failed to do so. The reason that this didn’t happen as expected is unknown at this point.
We appreciate the tremendous patience that you exhibited throughout the day.

Work continues to bring core infrastructure services online, such as the network and enterprise storage. User-facing services are beginning to queue up for restoration. We cannot provide a specific estimate at this point as to when we can begin to bring Learn@UW (D2L) online, yet expect that it may be an hour or longer.
Then, we will need to validate the service status and perform tests to verifying application integrity. This is expected to take approximately 2 - 4 hours to complete.
We will continue to provide updates via this email list (UWS Site Admin) until such time when campus email and list services are restored.

The power has been restored to the Data Center and work is underway to restore core services, starting with the primary infrastructure (e.g., network). DoIT follows a Continuity of Operations Plan to restore services in an orderly and proper manner.
It is expected to take ~2-4 hours to restore the Learn@UW service, which is largely dependent upon the state in which it comes back online. We will be able to engage after the core infrastructure services are available.
We will provide an update when we begin the verification process and application testing. This communication will include an estimate as to when the service will be available.

Electricians are working to restore the Universal Power Supply (UPS) that provides stable electricity to the infrastructure in the Data Center. We have yet to receive an estimate as to when the work will be completed. After such time we can bring the service online and conduct tests on the application.
We will keep you apprised as developments occur and understand the impact on you and your user community. Rest assured that the necessary staff are poised to re-enable the service in a timely and thorough manner. Your continued patience is appreciated.

Work continues to restore the power to the Data Center and bring Learn@UW and other IT services back online. Under normal conditions the services would be able to run using a backup power source, however, in this instance a catastrophic battery failure complicated the situation.
We do not have an estimate as to when Learn@UW will be restored. When the power has been restored, the process will involve bringing servers and services back online in a coordinated fashion. Testing will follow to ensure application functionality. We will provide an "all clear" message when the testing is complete, however, it is possible that your users may access the system prior to this notification and therefore experience issues or errors.
We will continue to keep you informed in a timely manner about important developments.

"A major power outage affecting the DoIT Data Center is the cause of the outage for Learn@UW and many other IT services. The issue occurred at ~7:50 a.m. this morning (6/18) and electricians and technicians are working to bring the systems back online.
We wil provide updates every hour or as developments warrant."
