Electricians are working to restore the Universal Power Supply (UPS) that provides stable electricity to the infrastructure in the Data Center. We have yet to receive an estimate as to when the work will be completed. After such time we can bring the service online and conduct tests on the application.

We will keep you apprised as developments occur and understand the impact on you and your user community. Rest assured that the necessary staff are poised to re-enable the service in a timely and thorough manner. Your continued patience is appreciated.


D2L Update: Outage Continues

Work continues to restore the power to the Data Center and bring Learn@UW and other IT services back online. Under normal conditions the services would be able to run using a backup power source, however, in this instance a catastrophic battery failure complicated the situation.

We do not have an estimate as to when Learn@UW will be restored. When the power has been restored, the process will involve bringing servers and services back online in a coordinated fashion. Testing will follow to ensure application functionality. We will provide an "all clear" message when the testing is complete, however, it is possible that your users may access the system prior to this notification and therefore experience issues or errors.

We will continue to keep you informed in a timely manner about important developments.

10:36 am update from UW-Madison D2L Utility staff member:

"A major power outage affecting the DoIT Data Center is the cause of the outage for Learn@UW and many other IT services. The issue occurred at ~7:50 a.m. this morning (6/18) and electricians and technicians are working to bring the systems back online.

We wil provide updates every hour or as developments warrant."

UW-Madison (where D2L servers are housed and managed) is without power this morning. Staff are currently working on restoring power and D2L access.


Reminder: June 14, 2014 morning D2L outage

Google Chrome Update

Google Chrome is being updated across campus due to several security bugs that were recently discovered in older versions of Chrome. The update has already been pushed to labs as of 5/1/2014.

Installs in offices will begin to be updated today (5/2/2014). When non-admin users install Chrome, Chrome will install into their user profile (C:\users\USERNAME\...) instead of Program Files due to the fact that a non-admin user does not have permissions to install to Program Files.

When the update is pushed out it will remove a "user install" and switch it to a "system install" that is located in Program Files. Users may see the an error message. After they click "OK" the install will be moved. They will be able to keep all settings/bookmarks/customizations. Users may have to re-create shortcuts in the start menu and task bar.
