Recently, Oracle has become aware of numerous flaws in their Java products. They have been releasing patches more frequently in recent weeks and LTS has been working hard to update these software products on our campus in order to ensure the security of our systems. In this process, Oracle has disabled some legacy features that many older applications and some newer ones rely on. If you know that a web site or any other application you use for your curriculum or your daily work uses Java, please verify that it continues to work after the latest version of Java is installed. You can see the version installed on your computer through the Software Center on Windows computers ( Start > All Programs > Utilities Under the “Installed Software tab”). We have seen some issues with Java RE 1.6 update 33 and later, Java RE 1.7 update 11 and later. If you have any applications that are a problem or you have further questions, please contact the LTS Help Desk.

Qualtrics is working today! However yesterday, Tuesday, February 12, Qualtrics experienced an outage at one of our five data centers. We apologize for this outage and the problems it may have created for you. Here's why it occurred and what we're doing to ensure it doesn't happen again: • This outage was not due to a failure of Qualtrics' hardware or software, but rather the data center's power systems. • Both the primary and secondary power sources in the data center failed, impacting all of the data center's customers. • We are actively conducting a detailed post-mortem on the service delivery and quality of the data center until we can ensure prevention of this type of outage in the future. Ensuring 24x7 uptime for our client is extremely important to Qualtrics, and we take extensive measures to deliver it. Again, please accept our sincere apologies if you were impacted by this outage, and please be assured that we are working diligently to ensure this does not occur in the future. 01/31/2013: MyBlugold intranet service restored

Around 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 30, the MyBlugold Intranet service went offline due to technical malfunctions. Service was restored a few hours later, however there are still some behind-the-scenes services like "search" and "metadata keywords" that have not been fully restored yet. We are currently working closely with Microsoft to fix these last few areas of service as quickly as possible. In the meantime, people can still access their sites and content just as before.

We have had a large number of people calling about the latest phishing attack. The subject heading says ""+* Suspencion of Your Email" and claims to be from University of Wisconsin Colleges. It is just another phishing attack trying to get you to enter your username and password so it can be used for illegal purposes. Please delete this email. We have blocked the address but these crooks are constantly finding new ways to steal confidential data.

CommonSpot has been experiencing caching problems. The effect is that updates to web pages are not showing up consistently. The company has now determined the problem and is in the process of developing a patch. We will post an update when the problem has been resolved.

One of the database servers was restarted at 1:00 PM today to fix a networking and virtualization problem. This problem was causing issues with a small number of web systems. Restarting the server has resolved all known issues.

Access to various campus services such as email and H: drives appeared to be unavailable this morning. The various services affected were due to a network slowdown. Technically the network was not down but flooded with traffic, causing network congestion and giving the appearance of the network being down. It appears the cause of the excess “chatter” or noise on the network may originate from a CPU on a switch, which is a network hardware component. Alerts notified tech services of the service problem. Since the network was not responsive they had to directly connect to the router on the server floor to diagnose it. The problem was identified and service was restored at 8:20.

UW System is experiencing a D2L outage. D2L Utility technical staffers at UW-Madison are working with Desire2Learn technologists to resolve this problem. An LTS announcement will be made when D2L is available again.

Urgent maintenance will be performed Monday morning (10/01/2012) between 4am and 5am. This maintenance will interrupt connectivity to various campus resources. The maintenance is being performed, outside of the normal maintenance window, to address a current operating condition. The condition has a high probability of resulting in severe degradation of network performance during normal/peak hours of operation, if not addressed.

09/25/2012: Internet Explorer 9 Critical Patch

A Microsoft Security Bulletin (KB2744842 ) was released for a critical security flaw in Internet Explorer. Due to the critical nature and at the recommendations of Microsoft, this update will be deployed to all campus computers today. The deadline will be 6pm for office computers and 1am for most labs. At that time, the update will install and the computer will wait for the overnight maintenance window to reboot. You may see a popup notifying you that your computer requires a reboot if logged in after the update installs. You can choose to reboot or you can log off your computer after you leave for the day. Please logoff and save all documents before leaving for the day today.

Because of the previously announced power outage for Hibbard and Brewer, scheduled for 5:00AM on Wednesday, September 19th we are asking that people who have offices in Hibbard or Brewer please shutdown your computer and display when you leave on Tuesday 16th. There is always a slight risk that when power is restored you can get a power surge that sometimes can burn out power components and other sensitive electronics. Thank you for your assistance.

Educators and Students: The slowness you are all experiencing in D2L right now is a problem for all institutions using Version 10 (UW schools upgraded in June). Desire2Learn personnel are working closely with the D2L administrators at UW-Madison to locate and resolve the problem. Unfortunately, no projection as to when this will be resolved is available.

As of Monday, July 2, 2012, the server alias names FS3.uwec.edu and CASS1.uwec.edu no longer exist. Staff departmental shares can be accessed via \\staff.uwec.edu\<deptsh$> and Student academic shares can be accessed via \\students.uwec.edu\deptdir. For example, if your S: drive used to map to \\fs3.uwec.edu\ltssh$, your new S: drive would map to \\staff.uwec.edu\ltssh$. Students and Staff accessing the student academic shares, should map to \\students.uwec.edu\deptdir. In most cases, the S: and W: drives will automatically map to their appropriate network shares.


07/02/2012: Brief D2L Outage This Morning

D2L will be unavailable from approximately 11:45 am - 11:50 am this morning, Monday, July 2, 2012. We are still dealing with the after effects of the outage that occurred yesterday (7/1). It is important for the D2L Utility people at UW-Madison to take the necessary steps to ensure the stability of this service.

D2L was upgraded to V10 for UWM on June 21, and for all UWS campuses on June 29 (last Friday).  The system (both UWM & UWS) experienced an unscheduled outage at ~9:20am this morning. Users received 500 errors when trying to access D2L. The vendor was engaged to determine the cause and solution immediately. Service was restored at 2:08pm. During the period of outage, Learn@UW Utility communicated with the campus site-admins with status updates. Campus users were informed through the login portals as well. More details of the incident will be shared as they become available.

D2L went down unexpectedly this morning at 9:00 am CDT. Technologists at UW-Madison (where the D2L servers are located) are working with Desire2Learn staff to resolve the problem. Service had not been restored as of 1:00 pm CDT today. No estimate is available as to when service is expected to be restored.

EMS Master Calendar Upgrade

The EMS Master Calendar -- http://calendar.uwec.edu/ -- will be offline for upgrades between 5:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. on Friday, March 16, which is during the normally scheduled maintenance window. This downtime and upgrade will not affect other EMS Enterprise tools.

We had an issue with our CISCO core router today at approximately 11:45AM that prevented some users from being able to use email, get to networked drives and load our home page. Problem was resolved shortly before noon.

Email delay

On 2/22/2012, a misconfigured spam filter caused some UWEC email to get quarantined. The problem was discovered and fixed this morning, and the quarantined email was redelivered to the originally intended recipients by 2:30p.

D2L will be upgraded to version 9.4.1 tonight -- beginning 10:00 pm (Wednesday, January 11) and ending 10:00 am tomorrow (Thursday, January 12). D2L will be completely unavailable during this 12-hour outage.

We are on track for the upgrade to CommonSpot 6.2 Friday morning, December 2. Be aware of the following: -Authoring services will be unavailable starting at midnight tonight, Thursday. -If all goes well, you can begin to make changes around 7:00 am on Friday. -During the morning on Friday, we ask you to make minor changes to your pages and report any problems immediately to web@uwec.edu. -As a precaution, in case we would need to revert back to our previous version of CommonSpot, please track any changes you make on Friday as you would need to recreate should a reversion be needed. -We’ll send you a status update around noon on Friday. Blocked Email

For the last few days, dozens of UWEC users have been responding to email phishing “password request” attacks from a variety of spammers all over the world. Those spammers have been using those passwords to send hundreds of thousands of spam emails through our servers, resulting in us getting blocked all over the internet. Steps have been taken to prevent this from happening in the future. As always, NEVER send your password to anyone via email. Over the next few hours the UWEC email servers should become unblocked and allow you to send email off campus. LTS

Email Being Sent Off-Campus Is Being Rejected

We had someone fall victim to a phishing attack and they gave out their email name and password. Subsequently their email account was used to spend out massive quantities of spam so many other email systems around the world are now blocking any email being sent from UW-Eau Claire. We are working to resolve this. Please, never, ever send your password to ANYONE and if you are creating passwords for other sites/purposes DO NOT use the same password.

The UWEC email server is currently being blocked by numerous internet email servers, due to a compromised student account and password. Email services like Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, CVTC, etc will be blocking us for a while.

Student and Staff H: drives, along with departmental share drives, are currently unavailable due to a failure in the storage system. The time needed to fix this problem is unknown at this point.
